Figs are members of the mulberry family. They contain useful amounts of iron, calcium, potassium and an exceptional amount of fibre. Traditionally, figs were used as an effective laxative and to soothe inflamed mucous membranes. Ancient Greek Olympians consumed figs to increase their speed and strength, and prized them so highly, they were crowned with fig wreaths.
