The Latin name for flaxseed is Linum usitatissimum meaning “most useful.” Used as food and textile fibre for over 5000 years, flaxseed is an important functional food due to its rich contents of α-linolenic acid (ALA), lignans, soluble fibre, quality protein and phenolic compounds. It has favourable effects on immunity, hormones and digestion and significant potential in disease prevention (cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer).
