Confucius, born around 551 BC, shaped Chinese political and moral thinking for centuries. During his time, success was measured in terms of an individual’s inner development rather than his outer position or accomplishments. Confucius was a great believer in the healing properties of ginger and was said to have eaten ginger at every meal. In China, ginger has traditionally been used to help treat stomach upset, diarrhoea, nausea, colic, arthritis and heart conditions. Ginger’s antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory potential is attributed to the interaction of a large number and variety of constituents, including volatile oils and phenol compounds (such as gingerols and shogaols).
